Why Pricing Matters

Undercharging is the #1 reason trade businesses fail in the first three years
A $10/hr rate increase across 1,300 billable hours = $13,000 extra revenue per year
Your rate must cover GST, income tax, insurance, vehicle, tools, and licensing — not just wages
Review your rate at least once per year as material and overhead costs rise
Set a profit margin buffer (10–20%) for slow periods, bad debts, and business growth
Use a call-out fee to cover travel and minimum time on-site

Frequently Asked Questions

What should tradies charge per hour in NZ?

NZ tradie rates depend on the trade: electricians $85–$130, plumbers $90–$140, builders $75–$120, painters $60–$95 — all GST-exclusive per hour. Use the calculator above for a rate based on your actual costs.

How do I calculate my charge-out rate?

Take-home income → gross up for tax → add overhead → divide by billable hours → add profit margin. The calculator does all of this automatically.

Do NZ tradies need to charge GST?

GST registration is mandatory once turnover exceeds $60,000/yr. Add 15% on top of your rate and show it separately on invoices. Most tradies exceed this threshold.

How many billable hours should I work per year?

A realistic estimate is 1,200–1,400 hours per year (46 weeks × 26–30 billable hrs). Allow for travel, quoting, admin, and materials runs — not every hour in the day is billable.
