Tips for Getting Your Concrete Right

Add 5–10% extra to your calculated volume for spillage and ground unevenness
For 0.5 m³ or more, a ready-mix truck is usually more cost-effective than bags
Structural work (foundations, retaining walls) requires an engineer-specified mix
Add reinforcing mesh or rebar where specified — never skip structural reinforcing
Protect fresh concrete from direct sun and wind for at least 24–48 hours
NZ minimum cure time before foot traffic: 24 hours; vehicle traffic: 7 days

Frequently Asked Questions

How many 20 kg bags of concrete do I need per m³?

You need approximately 100 bags of 20 kg pre-mix concrete per cubic metre. Each 20 kg bag yields about 0.01 m³ when mixed.

When should I use ready-mix instead of bags?

For pours of 0.5 m³ or more, a ready-mix truck is usually more cost-effective and consistent. Ready-mix costs roughly $200–$280/m³ delivered in NZ. For structural work, a specified mix from a ready-mix supplier is recommended.

How thick should my slab be?

100 mm is the standard minimum for residential slabs and patios. Driveways need 100–150 mm. Paths can be as thin as 75 mm for foot traffic only.
